On 12-13 September 2024, a HOSPEEM delegation visited Oslo to strengthen collaboration with its Norwegian member organisation, SPEKTER, and share knowledge on healthcare workforce issues. Led by Secretary General Marta Branca, the delegation explored SPEKTER’s activities, including wage settlements and healthcare challenges and visited the Sunaas Rehabilitation Hospital and the Akershus University Hospital.

HOSPEEM Vice-Secretary General John Delamere participated in a seminar organised by the cross-sectoral social partners on “Shaping Working Time: The Role of Collective Bargaining” on 3 October. He highlighted the difficulties healthcare employers face in adhering to the Working Time Directive due to the sector’s 24/7 operations and the complexities of reducing working hours in sectors with labour shortages and an ageing workforce.

On 10 October 2024, HOSPEEM participated in a panel discussion on “Strengthening Europe’s Healthcare Workforce” during the European Week of Regions. It addressed the impact of staff shortages, working conditions, and skills mismatches on healthcare systems and explored potential actions to attract and retain talent.

On 11 October 2024, the European Commission's DG REGIO hosted partners of the Harnessing Talent Platform, a collaborative initiative promoting dialogue among stakeholders at European, national, and regional levels. HOSPEEM is involved in the Health Working Group, which focuses on enhancing service models and working conditions.

The meeting addressed key issues and potential synergies with other EU initiatives, while François Gallaga highlighted the importance of tackling skills gaps for European competitiveness.
